How to: Have a Successful Year

Updated: 3 days ago

At the end of last year, I shared an Instagram post that included some of my favourite achievements from 2019. {See Post}

I enjoy doing this because not only does it show people what they can achieve in a year, it also reminds me to stay grateful. After publishing my post I kept getting asked ‘HOW?’, I realised there was no point in me sharing my achievements and ‘inspiring’ people if I wasn’t really showing them how they can do the same.

Introducing the HOW TO series! Until the final quarter of this year, I am going to be sharing a series of blog posts on the process and ‘secrets’ behind my achievements. There is so much to tell. After this series, I am going to be sharing something extremely special to truly help you guys so stick around!

Up first ….

How to: Have a Successful Year

When we hear the word ‘success’ and how to become successful or do something successfully we are always expecting this secret ingredient that we hadn’t heard of before, something revolutionary. The truth is everything there is to learn and know about success you probably know already, it’s just about implementation. Here’s my main two:

1. Vision/Goal

It’s very difficult to actualise something you can’t see. When I say ‘see’ I don’t just mean this image in your head. I mean the genuine belief that what you envision can and will become a reality but it’s only a matter of time.

I personally have a vision for how I want all the different areas of my life to look by the end of the year and I mean ALL, including my bank account, my book shelf, my LinkedIn etc. For example, I made it my goal to pick up awards in 2019 -they didn’t just fall into my lap (more on this in the next blog post). I also made it my goal to get into specific schools for #MadeInHackney, the logo for each school was on my vision board and I saw them every single day.

By the way, goals aren’t goals if they don’t push you and cause you take action. I WILL graduate this year, that isn’t a goal; there is nothing I need to earnestly change to ensure it happens. Now if I said I wanted to graduate with a 1st Class, that would most definitely be a goal!

2. DAILY Action

In my opinion, even more important than setting big audacious goals is to write down the habits and the person we need to become in order to accomplish our goals. And even more important than that is our obedience to what we have written.

So how do we stay obedient to what we have willed to do?

True transformation happens though the mind. Your thoughts control your feelings, your feelings control your actions, and your actions control your life. For me my thoughts transformed primarily through what I consumed and surrounded myself with; the people, the podcasts, the books, the sermons and so on, eventually my mind began to spew out all the positivity I took in. This is a consistent practice, one motivational video at the start of the year wont sustain 365 days.

I have also learned that the results of my daily actions are often seen approximately six months down the line and sometimes longer. For instance, I applied for 2019 summer internships in JUNE 2018, received my first offer in OCTOBER 2018 and didn’t start my internship till JUNE 2019! Likewise, you can start a new study routine today but probably won’t see its benefits until results day in six months. So stay consistent & be patient, it’s working.
